The Cook

They had a Cook with them who stood alone

For boiling chicken with a marrow bone,

But what a pity – so it seemed to me,

That he should have an ulcer on his knee.

The Cook is a particularly good example of the timeless quality of Geoffrey Chaucer’s writing:  it is easy to imagine today’s  Health & Safety  team bearing down on him with his running abscess while working  in his kitchen.  Our decorators particularly enjoy painting the open sore on his leg, always  making sure it is not masked by his  russet apron!
